Digging Into Wollaton’s Walled Garden

Added on 12 September 2026

A busy week ahead at Wollaton Walled Garden as York Archaeology are currently conducting an archaeological dig, with several trenches on the go. They are hoping to find the base of the companion greenhouse to the Cucumber House (which was the Melon House), as well as the steps shown in the historical photograph below. Additionally, they are exposing more of the large conservatory next to the Head Gardener’s Cottage.

You can see the team at work when the Walled Garden is open for free as part of the Heritage Open Days on Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 September. The excavations will also be on show during the Autumn Festival Weekend on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September.

Full details of the times for our upcoming Walled Garden openings can be found on the Events page.
